SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting
DESCRIPTION:CASW established the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting in 2000. Given annually\, the prize seeks to honor a writer for a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years which\, for reasons of uncommon clarity\, accuracy\, breadth of coverage\, enterprise\, originality\, insight and narrative power\, has made a profound and lasting contribution to public awareness and understanding of critical advances in medical science and their impact on human health and well-being. \nThe honoree receives an award of $5\,000. The prize is presented at a joint awards ceremony held in conjunction with ScienceWriters\, a conference that combines CASW’s New Horizons in Science briefings and the National Association of Science Writers’ workshops. Awardee travel expenses to the award ceremony are covered. \nOpens annually on Jan. 1.

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Taylor/Blakeslee Graduate Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers fellowships of $6\,000 to working journalists and students of outstanding ability who have been accepted for enrollment in graduate-level programs in science writing. One candidate interested in covering the physical sciences—such as physics\, astronomy\, or chemistry—will receive an enhanced fellowship that also includes mentorship from a senior journalist and additional travel funding for reporting projects. \nScience writing includes writing about science\, medicine\, health\, technology\, and the environment for the general public. Preference will be given to applicants aiming to pursue careers in science journalism\, rather than strictly technical writing or public relations. At the same time\, we recognize that many people do different kinds of science writing over the course of their careers.

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Science+Science Writing Session Proposals for ScienceWriters2026
DESCRIPTION:Science writers are invited to propose a panel discussion on challenges or issues in covering science as part of the CASW New Horizons in Science program. \nDrawing on current topics in the news\, these “Science + Science Writing” offerings are intended to dissect issues at the intersection of science\, communication\, and journalism. Panels often present a sort of “case study” of a hot-button issue in science\, how it was covered\, and what we can learn and apply to future coverage. \nThey also are intended to provide opportunities for open conversation between scientists and writers on topics that are controversial\, ethically fraught\, or otherwise difficult. For example\, recent “Science + Science Writing” panels have addressed coverage of COVID-19 origins\, science and science journalism in the Arctic during the Ukraine War\, and the complexities of clean-tech climate solutions.
