SUMMARY:What Editors Actually Want: Pitching Environmental Investigations
DESCRIPTION:“Editors play a decisive role in shaping which environmental investigations move forward and get published\, yet their expectations are often opaque to reporters. In this session you will learn how editors assess pitches\, what signals for them a strong investigative idea\, and why some proposals advance while others stall. \n“Drawing on the experience of several outlets\, the session offers concrete guidance on pitching accountability-driven environmental investigations. Participants will learn how to sharpen their story angles and align their proposals with editorial priorities and funding considerations. \n“Designed for journalists committed to uncovering environmental harm and holding power to account.”

SUMMARY:Data Journalism: Reporting Where Climate and Health Meet
DESCRIPTION:“In this webinar\, Climate Central and SciLine will walk journalists through the tools and skills needed to report accurately and confidently when climate and health overlap. You’ll learn how to find climate and health data\, key terminology\, where to find the right experts\, and how to tell familiar stories in a way that centers the communities most affected by climate change and its health impacts. We’ll also look at real newsroom examples of health reporting built on these tools and skills\, so you can see firsthand what kinds of questions the data can help answer and how it fits into timely storytelling. You’ll walk away from this session with story ideas\, paired with graphics\, toolkits\, and expert resources to support your reporting.”

SUMMARY:Inside SAM.gov: An Open Data Demo for Journalists
DESCRIPTION:A webinar hosted by The Journalist’s Resource: “SAM.gov — the federal government’s System for Award Management — is one of the most underused databases in public-interest journalism. It tracks hundreds of billions of dollars in federal contracts and grants\, the companies and organizations that receive them\, and entities barred or suspended from doing business with the government. If you cover federal spending\, government contractors\, nonprofits\, or public accountability\, this data is for you. \n“This session is a hands-on demo\, not a panel discussion. We’ll walk through what’s in SAM.gov’s open data\, how to access and navigate it\, and how to start asking it real questions. Then we’ll open it up: Bring your story ideas\, and we’ll work through what the data can and can’t tell you.”

SUMMARY:Understanding the Media: A Starter Guide for Scientists
DESCRIPTION:“SciLine has facilitated thousands of interactions between scientists and journalists\, always with the goal of adding research-backed evidence and context to news stories. We know that ‘the media’ can seem like a black box to scientists and that speaking to reporters can be confusing or even intimidating. \n“This free\, virtual\, one-hour course—designed specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experience—teaches the basics scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement. We provide an overview of the U.S. news landscape\, including the different types of media outlets and reporters a scientist might encounter (and what each is looking for)\, professional similarities and differences between journalists and scientists\, and the risks and benefits of participating in interviews.”

SUMMARY:Press Briefing: AI’s Unquenchable Thirst for Water
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond its staggering electricity demands\, AI requires water — and a lot of it. \n“A single data center can consume over 300\,000 gallons a day — equivalent to the water used in a thousand homes — to cool the computers powering your chat prompts. As climate change worsens water scarcity through rising temperatures and disruptions to precipitation patterns\, AI threatens to further drain water from the areas that need it most; over two-thirds of data centers built since 2022 are in water-stressed regions. \n“As big tech continues its plan to build as many data centers as possible\, join Covering Climate Now for a one-hour discussion where we’ll highlight the reasons for AI’s ever-growing thirst\, explore how to cover the local concerns of communities facing water shortages\, and investigate potential solutions to safeguard this increasingly scarce resource.”

SUMMARY:Press Briefing: AI Data Centers & Their Climate and Community Impact
DESCRIPTION:“The tech industry’s insatiable interest in AI is driving a data center boom in the US that shows no sign of slowing down; nearly 3\,000 are under construction\, adding to the more than 4\,000 already in operation. The environmental footprint of these facilities is immense: A single AI-focused data center consumes as much electricity as 100\,000 households\, the largest ones under development are expected to use 20 times as much. Much of this power comes from fossil fuels with new gas power generation doubling over the past year\, driven by AI’s need for energy\, when we need to be lowering emissions. \n“Once touted by tech companies for their potential boon to stimulate local economies with short-lived construction jobs\, these proposed facilities have seen nationwide pushback from across the political spectrum for driving up electricity prices\, which are now climbing more than twice as fast as inflation\, and for their local environmental impacts. \n“This discussion will equip journalists with the fundamental understanding of the economic and climate impacts stemming from AI’s vast power use\, explore how to investigate data centers in their area\, and highlight unique story ideas to tackle this growing issue playing out in communities across the world.” \nThis CCNow webinar is the first in a three-part series on AI.

SUMMARY:Covering Climate Across Beats
DESCRIPTION:“Climate change touches every corner of our lives. From the food we eat to the sports we play\, from the economy to public health\, and from education to infrastructure. Yet\, too often\, the climate connection goes unreported\, leaving audiences with incomplete stories. \n“The truth is\, every journalist is\, in a way\, a climate journalist. Whether you cover agriculture\, sports\, crime\, or culture\, climate change is shaping the stories on your beat. Recognizing and reporting these connections isn’t just good journalism: It’s essential to giving audiences the full picture. \n“Join us for a live training session on how to make the climate connection across beats. We’ll share practical tips for identifying climate angles in everyday stories\, explore examples from newsrooms around the world\, and show you how even one sentence can transform your reporting. No science background required\, just a willingness to connect the dots!” \nJournalists worldwide can choose one of two sessions: \n\nFebruary 19\, 6 a.m. US Eastern Time (11 a.m. UTC). SUMMARY:Causes and Responses to Extreme Winter Weather
DESCRIPTION:“Recent winter extremes have raised new questions about how a warming Arctic may be reshaping weather far beyond the polar regions. Hosted by URI’s Metcalf Institute and the Solutions Journalism Network\, this training explores the links between Arctic ice loss\, polar vortex disruptions\, and the growing frequency of severe winter weather across the Northern Hemisphere. Panelists will examine what scientists know\, where questions remain\, and how journalists can responsibly report on these connections. The discussion will also focus on solutions — such as grid resiliency efforts in Texas — that show how communities are adapting to these emerging risks. \n“The live training is open to working journalists only. After the event\, a recording of the training will be available to the public for free on the Metcalf Institute and Solutions Journalism Network websites.”

SUMMARY:A Conversation on ‘The Cure for Everything’: Where American Public Health Is and Where It’s Headed
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in a century\, American life expectancy is declining\, an unprecedented trend for a wealthy nation and one driven largely by preventable causes of early death. The foundations of public health reforms — sanitation\, clean water\, safe housing\, pollution control\, workplace safety\, and more — doubled America’s life expectancy between the mid-1800s and today.\nBut the nation has now spent a century shifting money and attention away from public health and toward clinical medicine. The pandemic exposed the cost of that shift\, including widening health inequities\, inadequate emergency response coordination\, and erosion of public trust. \nIn her book “The Cure for Everything: The Epic Struggle for Public Health and a Radical Vision for Human Thriving\,” Michelle Williams tells the story of how the U.S. overcame a history of infectious disease\, poisonous environments\, and early death and how it’s still possible to rebalance clinical medicine and public health to prevent hundreds of thousands of annual avoidable premature deaths and improve all Americans’ quality of life. \nIn this webinar\, Williams will talk about key lessons from her book that could inspire lines of investigation for journalists. Linda Marsa\, a health journalist who helped Williams with the book\, will briefly address how that collaboration worked and how journalists can mine the book for story ideas in their communities.

SUMMARY:AHCJ Webinar: Building Audience With Local Climate-Health Stories
DESCRIPTION:“Climate change is often covered as a vast\, global crisis\, defined by melting ice sheets\, stalled international agreements and the persistent grip of fossil fuels. What gets far less attention are the local stories unfolding across the country: clinics adapting to wildfire\, counties redesigning emergency response plans for extreme heat\, public health responses to vector-borne diseases and more. \n“These stories reveal what’s working\, who’s innovating and where communities are making progress in protecting public health. For health journalists\, this gap is an opportunity — you just need to know where to look. In this webinar\, we’ll explore strategies\, tools and reporting pathways that can help you find compelling\, community-driven stories at the intersection of climate change and public health.”

SUMMARY:AHCJ Webinar: Trust\, Public Health Reporting and the CDC — Insider Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:“A lot has happened this year at the CDC with walkouts\, layoffs and the disappearance of data and reports\, presenting major challenges for journalists who report on public health. Especially when reporting on infectious disease\, the compromising of the CDC as a source of public health data and up-to-date information about outbreaks has huge implications for public health. But that’s not all that has been lost — not by a long shot. The Secretary of Health and Human Services has also undermined the CDC as a source of trustworthy information about drug use/harm reduction\, autism\, chronic disease and diet. \n“Although the dismantling of the CDC has cost the country its oldest\, most stalwart resource for public health information\, the CDC diaspora has not vanished in silence. Join us for a conversation with former CDC officials Deb Houry\, Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Director for Program and Science; Demetre Daskalakis\, former Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; and Daniel Jernigan\, former Director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. Moderated by AHCJ Health Beat Leader Tara Haelle\, the discussion will explore: \n\nWhere journalists should turn for the reliable\, evidence-based reporting resources that formerly had a home at the CDC’s web pages.\nWho\, if anyone\, has taken over data collection and communication about infectious disease.\nWhat is missing\, now\, from the national public health picture.\nTheir biggest worries about the potential consequences of the loss of this body of expertise and communication.”
