SUMMARY:Beyond Pretty Pictures: Utilising Graphics To Communicate Science
DESCRIPTION:“In today’s crowded scientific landscape\, visuals (graphical abstracts\, posters\, banners\, or even a well-designed slide) can make the difference between being noticed or overlooked. The right illustration clarifies complex ideas\, draws attention\, and helps your research reach audiences beyond your immediate field. Visual communication is no longer optional. From conference posters to social media\, from CVs to online articles\, the ability to convey science through images can shape how your work is perceived\, and even influence the opportunities that follow. This talk will cover how researchers and science communicators can transform the way they present their work using principles from art\, design\, and illustration. You’ll learn practical strategies to craft visuals that tell your scientific story clearly and memorably\, helping your work (and your career) go further. \n“Cost: Free for SWCC Members / $30 CAD for Non-Members \n“Are you a non-member of SWCC registering for this event? If you decide to become a member of SWCC within 2 weeks of the event date\, your membership fee (in the applicable category) will be discounted by the amount you paid for event registration. To activate your discounted membership within the 2-week period\, email office@sciencewriters.ca.”

SUMMARY:Media Training for Scientists: Essential Skills for Successful Interviews
DESCRIPTION:“Scientists are often wary of speaking with the media because of concerns about being misquoted\, misunderstood\, or otherwise contributing to misinformation. And while expert sources don’t control the final outcome of a news story\, there are strategies to maximize the chances that any story they help with contains accurate scientific information and context. \n“In 45-minutes of presentation and 15-minutes of Q&A\, this webinar will guide you through working with the media when public discourse may feel hostile toward science.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Gordon Sinclair Roving Reporter Bursary
DESCRIPTION:“The Gordon Sinclair Roving Reporter Bursary supports a research and reporting trip by an early career Canadian journalist who has recently graduated from one of Canada’s university-level journalism programs. The purpose of the $15\,000 bursary is to encourage a young journalist to get off the beaten track for a minimum of six weeks. The successful applicant will outline a proposal to travel abroad or to a region of Canada that is not usually well covered by the media and to research and then prepare a substantial body of journalistic work on an important issue. A key element of the bursary is journalistic mentorship for the successful candidate and some assistance with preparations for the trip. \n“Journalists who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who graduated from a university-level journalism program in the past five years are eligible to apply for the Gordon Sinclair Roving Reporter Bursary. Journalism students who are in their graduating year are eligible to apply for the bursary but must demonstrate that they are eligible to graduate this June. Applicants who work full-time with a media organization must be able to take a leave of absence for a minimum of six weeks to take up the reporting trip if selected for the bursary.”

SUMMARY:What Editors Actually Want: Pitching Environmental Investigations
DESCRIPTION:“Editors play a decisive role in shaping which environmental investigations move forward and get published\, yet their expectations are often opaque to reporters. In this session you will learn how editors assess pitches\, what signals for them a strong investigative idea\, and why some proposals advance while others stall. \n“Drawing on the experience of several outlets\, the session offers concrete guidance on pitching accountability-driven environmental investigations. Participants will learn how to sharpen their story angles and align their proposals with editorial priorities and funding considerations. \n“To make guidance as concrete as possible\, we offer participants an option to send us their own pitch to get feedback on it! Our speakers will select 4-5 most interesting ones from those that we receive from the attendees (by 4 May 2026\, Monday\, 3pm CET). Discussing the pitches received will happen in the real time\, you would not be able to see it in the recording or transcript. You will find more details in the email confirming your registration.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: NASW David Perlman Mentoring Program
DESCRIPTION:“This summer\, NASW is again offering its virtual summer mentoring program for graduate and undergraduate students\, which will run from June 3 to July 29. The program is named for longtime science writer and past NASW president David Perlman\, who died in 2020 at the age of 101\, three years after retiring from the San Francisco Chronicle. David was a mentor to countless members of the science writing community and always made time for kind and supportive words\, especially for early career writers. \n“Students who have demonstrated a serious interest in science writing will be paired with mentors and have the opportunity to publish a short science news story or broadcast piece in the NASW Student Newsroom or other media outlet. Recent graduates (within the last year) are also welcome to participate in the program. Students are not required to write a story to participate in the program.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Stanford Health Media Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:“We are pleased to announce the third year of the Stanford School of Medicine Health Equity Media Fellowship\, a program from Medical Humanities and the Arts. \n“While health journalism has flourished since the pandemic amid a groundswell of mainstream interest\, changes in the media environment have challenged news outlets—especially local newsrooms—with dwindling resources and a limited pool of specialized health care reporters. Such resource and expertise gaps have contributed in part to the proliferation of health misinformation materially impacting public health\, such as related to infectious disease outbreaks like measles and natural disasters like extreme heat. \n“The fellowship is a one-of-a-kind\, paid training opportunity tailored specifically to address these challenges. It is designed to help fill gaps in rigorous\, solutions-driven reporting on health equity in the United States by developing a pipeline of talented early career health communicators—especially given the sparsity of paid opportunities for career development in this cohort. \n“This hybrid program begins in September 2026 with an intensive skills-building boot-camp at Stanford University’s medical campus\, followed by six months of project-based and immersive\, hands-on training. Fellows who do not already have newsroom affiliation will be matched for an externship with newsroom partners including ABC News\, Ethnic Media Services\, and elsewhere. In addition to receiving graduate-level education from leading experts\, extensive networking opportunities with national and local leaders\, and longitudinal mentorship from leading practitioners in public health and journalism\, fellows will receive a $6\,000 stipend to support their efforts\, as well as an additional $500 stipend for travel expenses. Fellows will be expected to publish at least three articles in credentialed news outlets by the termination of their fellowship term.”

SUMMARY:First Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels
DESCRIPTION:“To help journalists understand the Santa Marta conference and how they might go about covering it [in person or remotely]\, CCNow hosted a webinar on April 15. Panelists included key Colombian and Dutch diplomats who are organizing the conference and The Guardian’s Jonathan Watts. CCNow’s executive director and co-founder\, Mark Hertsgaard\, moderated. CCNow’s Hertsgaard and Elena González will also be in Santa Marta to support journalists with their coverage; please contact them via editors@coveringclimatenow.org. \n“The First Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels\, taking place April 24–29 in Santa Marta\, Colombia\, will begin drafting a global ‘roadmap’ to phase out fossil fuels. Petrostates used UN consensus rules to veto that idea last November at COP30. But as CCNow pointed out in an article published this week\, the Santa Marta conference will not be governed by UN rules. What’s more\, the 85-plus countries that favored a roadmap at COP30 collectively amount to the biggest economic superpower on Earth. If they can outline a credible roadmap for withdrawing their immense buying power from fossil fuels\, it could echo the effect of the 2015 Paris Agreement\, causing governments and private investors alike to follow suit for fear their fossil fuel investments will become stranded assets.
