SUMMARY:DEADLINE: The Data-Driven Reporting Project
DESCRIPTION:“Today much of investigative journalism is about acquiring\, organizing and analyzing large\, digital document sets. Technology plays a critical role in all phases but those resources are unevenly distributed. Only a few news organizations are able to take advantage of these advances. Many local news organizations and freelance journalists\, especially those who serve local and underrepresented communities\, would benefit from additional resources. This [Google News Initiative + Northwestern University | Medill] program aims to close this gap with targeted\, financial awards to organizations and freelancers working on document-focused\, investigative stories.” \nGrants of up to $35\,000 will be awarded for projects that serve local and/or underrepresented communities in the US and Canada. Recipients will also receive specialized training and support from Medill on Google Journalist Studio tools as well as other resources.

SUMMARY:Inside SAM.gov: An Open Data Demo for Journalists
DESCRIPTION:A webinar hosted by The Journalist’s Resource: “SAM.gov — the federal government’s System for Award Management — is one of the most underused databases in public-interest journalism. It tracks hundreds of billions of dollars in federal contracts and grants\, the companies and organizations that receive them\, and entities barred or suspended from doing business with the government. If you cover federal spending\, government contractors\, nonprofits\, or public accountability\, this data is for you. \n“This session is a hands-on demo\, not a panel discussion. We’ll walk through what’s in SAM.gov’s open data\, how to access and navigate it\, and how to start asking it real questions. Then we’ll open it up: Bring your story ideas\, and we’ll work through what the data can and can’t tell you.”

Given the enormous changes in federal spending and policy priorities now taking place in Washington DC\, we are particularly interested in story proposals that examine the impact of these changes. Both freelance and staff journalists in all forms of media with at least five years’ professional experience are eligible. Journalists from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. \n“Previous McGraw Fellows have explored a wide variety of topics — and you don’t need to be a business reporter to apply. Many have been generalists\, or cover beats such as the environment\, health care\, education. Others focus on inequality or corporate accountability.” \nDeadlines: \n\nApril 13\, 2026 for the Spring 2026 fellowships\nOctober 12\, 2026 for the Fall 2026 fellowships
