SUMMARY:RCIScience Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:“Journal Club is a new online series where practicing and aspiring science communicators come together to dig into the research behind the craft. Each session\, a volunteer presents a short summary of a recent science communication paper and leads a group discussion on its findings\, implications\, and real-world applications. It’s a low-pressure\, high-impact way to stay sharp\, connect with peers\, and bridge the gap between theory and practice. Whether you’re a grad student\, early-career communicator\, or just curious about the evidence behind effective SciComm\, Journal Club is your invitation to think critically\, share openly\, and grow together.” \nOn August 27\, 2026\, 12 -12:40 p.m. EDT\, “we’ll be discussing ‘Three scientists walk into a bar… Approaching new audiences for informal science communication: the project “Plötzlich Wissen!” (Sudden Knowledge!)'”

SUMMARY:Everyone's Talking About Peptides: What Reporters Should Know
DESCRIPTION:“Peptides made headlines this summer when an FDA advisory panel decided compounding pharmacies could prepare six peptides for patients with a prescription. Great news for wellness influencers\, celebrities and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — among the many people who have touted the benefits of peptides for muscle growth\, fat loss\, anti-aging and enhanced athletic performance. But what are peptides\, and are they safe? \n“In this webinar\, medical experts Dhruv Khullar\, an associate professor of health policy and economics at Weill Cornell Medical College\, and Rachel Frank\, professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine\, will help you get a handle on what you need to know about peptides\, what the media often gets wrong when reporting on them\, and what stories still deserve to be explored. As always\, the discussion will be followed by a Q&A.”

SUMMARY:How To Use Data To Report on Health Care Disparities Near You
DESCRIPTION:“There are huge disparities in health outcomes across race\, income and geography in the U.S. But sweeping generalizations do little to illuminate how those disparities are playing out in specific communities and regions. In this webinar\, we’ll identify reporting strategies and data sets that can help reporters identify overlooked health system gaps in their coverage areas\, which most often can be found in neighborhoods with health equity challenges and the lowest life expectancy. By harnessing the power of multiple data sets\, reporters can find fresh stories on the health of communities while pinpointing tough new questions for local officials and health systems on what they’re doing to address these problems. We’ll identify which data sources are most useful for this kind of reporting and walk through some of the skills and tools reporters need to get started on analyses of their area.”

SUMMARY:Beyond the Headlines: Reporting on Solar Geoengineering
DESCRIPTION:“Solar geoengineering is receiving growing attention\, bringing a complex and still-evolving field into wider public conversation. Journalists face a difficult reporting challenge: how to cover a field marked by scientific uncertainty\, potentially far-reaching risks\, uneven governance\, and sharply different views about whether and how research should proceed. \n“Designed exclusively for journalists and media professionals\, this introductory webinar will provide a balanced foundation for reporting on solar geoengineering. It will also introduce a solutions journalism approach to covering solar geoengineering. This does not mean treating solar geoengineering itself as a ‘solution’ to climate change. Rather\, the webinar can help journalists critically examine responses to challenges surrounding the field—from research governance and public participation to misinformation and gaps in oversight.” \nHosted by The Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering.

SUMMARY:Rural Health\, Data and Data Challenges in the Age of Rural Transformation
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is Part 2 of our 2026 Rural Health Webinar Series. Attend at least four of our five sessions\, complete a brief knowledge check and earn an AHCJ Certification in Covering Rural Health for your resume. \nAccess to accurate\, varied rural data is key to accounting for\, supporting\, and enabling rural residents and their communities to thrive. It’s also crucial for journalists reporting on the health of people living in rural areas and the institutions serving them. At the same time\, constraints and limitations in the collection and use of rural data can complicate those efforts. This webinar will focus on the current landscape of rural areas as it relates to health\, healthcare and public health. \nYou’ll learn about the challenges in the collection and measurement of rural data\, limitations related to geographic scope\, and the administrative burdens associated with purchasing or accessing rural data. Lastly\, you’ll learn where to find rural data and what to keep in mind when covering or reviewing this data. You’ll leave with a better understanding of the rural health story\, how data supports that story\, and how data challenges can be detrimental to supporting people and their communities.

SUMMARY:Who Will Steward Humanity's Public Data? Collective Global Stewardship for the Long Horizon
DESCRIPTION:“In a single generation\, humanity has created unprecedented public data inheritance\, such as scientific measurements\, cultural heritage\, legal records\, scholarly publications\, and environmental observations. Countless forms of human experience have been captured\, connected and made accessible online. But public data does not preserve itself. \n“What will it take to steward public data at global scale? And who will do it? The Public Data Project and Library Innovation Lab\, along with JJ Dearborn\, an Information Studies PhD researcher at the University of Glasgow and Strategic Advisor at Data Futures\, invite you to imagine and build a different future with us: a data ecosystem where stewardship is a shared responsibility\, resilience is designed into our systems\, and all the world’s communities have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from humanity’s digital commonwealth.”

SUMMARY:13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Travel grants are available for journalists to cover the 13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum. \n“The HLF is an annual networking conference where 200 carefully selected young researchers in mathematics and computer science have the unique chance to meet distinguished scientists in their fields for one week of interdisciplinary academic dialogue. The vibrant atmosphere of the event inspires a blend of scientific discussion and informal interactions among the participants\, setting the HLF apart from traditional conferences. Panel discussions\, lectures and workshops spur scientifically driven debate\, which is then balanced by a variety of social events\, permitting participants to pursue their discourse in an inviting environment. \n“Attending journalists will have the exclusive opportunity to interview renowned laureates from mathematics and computer science\, both in press panels and one-on-one. In addition\, they will be able to engage directly with some of the most promising young researchers from those fields. Journalists are permitted to take part in virtually all of the Forum’s scientific program elements as well as social gatherings in the evenings. Opportunities will also be provided for journalists to network and collaborate with their peers in the press corps. \n“Grants cover travel and visa costs as well as room and board during the stay in Heidelberg. \n“Journalists who do not receive a travel grant or who have missed the travel grant application deadline [of April 8] may nevertheless apply for accreditation to cover the Forum at their own expense” (apply for the latter here; deadline Sept. 9\, 2026).

SUMMARY:Press Briefing: Rising Energy Bills\, Climate and the 2026 Midterms
DESCRIPTION:“Americans are facing an energy affordability crisis\, and relief can’t come soon enough. How current officials and winning candidates tackle energy affordability will determine whether states maintain progress in decarbonizing their energy systems or lock in new fossil fuel infrastructure for decades to come. Though candidates are prioritizing the issue in their midterm campaigns\, too often\, they fail to provide the climate context worsening this crisis. \n“Join Covering Climate Now and Canary Media for a special conversation explaining what’s causing the energy affordability crisis\, including the impact of AI data centers\, which are turbocharging energy demand and costs around the country; what elected officials can do; and\, crucially\, how climate change threads throughout the whole conversation. Come with questions\, leave with story ideas!”
