SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Civic Science Media Funding Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:“Amidst declining public trust in science\, civic science media offers a transformative approach to journalism. It moves beyond one-way information dissemination to foster multi-way conversations involving scientists\, journalists\, and the communities directly affected by scientific advancements. This collaborative model aims to make the public active shapers of the scientific narrative\, addressing real-world challenges like climate change and public health. \n“The Center for Cooperative Media’s Civic Science Media Collaborations program is dedicated to catalyzing these vital partnerships. Building on insights from past initiatives and studies\, the program funds projects designed to support and grow civic science media. Previous awardees\, such as the Water Justice Media program and Planet Detroit’s air quality project\, have demonstrated the power of these collaborations in amplifying and addressing community-based scientific concerns.” \nA total of 10 awards up to $15\,000 each are available\, plus coaching and more.

SUMMARY:Talking Shop: The 89 Percent Project’s Next Phase
DESCRIPTION:“CCNow’s 89 Percent Project made news in April reporting that 80 to 89% of the world’s people want their governments to take stronger climate action. The next phase of the project explores the people behind the numbers: who are they\, why do they care\, are they surprised to learn they’re the overwhelming majority? At this Talking Shop\, journalists interested in participating in this phase of The 89 Percent Project can swap ideas with journalists from The Guardian\, France Télévisions\, and Agencia Pública about how to gather candid\, revealing answers from your audiences and the general public in order to present a vivid\, factually grounded portrait of the global climate majority in all its diversity.”

SUMMARY:ASC Webinar: Science Engagement With People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:“More than 7 in 10 U.S. adults claim a religious affiliation. In STEM fields however\, faith is often thought to be a source of tension. The U.S. public views scientists as mostly trustworthy in their areas of expertise\, but also as hostile or indifferent to faith. Additionally\, many scientists of faith are quiet about their religious identity\, fearing derision or discrimination. Our workshop highlights faith as an important aspect of identity that should be specifically considered in science engagement.” \nLocation: Zoom

SUMMARY:AI Chatbots and Mental Health: How To Report Responsibly on a New Risk
DESCRIPTION:“Artificial intelligence-powered chatbots can provide round-the-clock access to supportive ‘conversations\,’ which some people are using as a substitute for interactions with licensed mental health clinicians or friends. But users may develop dependencies on the tools and mistake these transactions for real relationships with people or true therapy. Recent news stories have discussed the dangers of chatbots’ fabricated\, supportive nature. In some incidents\, people developed AI-related psychosis or were supported in their plans to commit suicide. \n“What is it about this technology that sucks people in? Who is at risk? How can you report on these conditions sensitively? Join moderator Karen Blum and an expert panel\, including psychiatrists John Torous\, M.D. (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center); Keith Sakata\, M.D. (UC San Francisco)\, and Mashable Senior Reporter Rebecca Ruiz\, to learn more.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Neal Peirce Foundation Journalism Travel Grants
DESCRIPTION:“We support journalists in covering under-told stories about ways to make cities and their metro regions work better for all their people. An ideal project for us to support is one where a journalist aims to inform a critical local debate by reporting on how a promising approach in another city is working. Our travel grants of up to $1\,500 enable journalists to travel to cities within the U.S. to produce one or more stories for publication. The awards\, selected through a competitive review process\, cover travel expenses necessary for on-the-ground reporting. We invite full-time freelancers as well as journalists currently employed by a news organization to apply.”

SUMMARY:Balancing Hope With Hurdles: How To Cover Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal
DESCRIPTION:“Solutions journalism is often rooted in optimism\, but how do you tell hopeful stories without glossing over formidable challenges? Marine carbon dioxide removal pushes this tension to the limit. Approaches like Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement are *geophysically* plausible at massive scale\, yet face massive scientific\, political\, and social hurdles that could prevent deployment. In this session\, two leading scientists — Dr. Jaime Palter and Dr. David Ho — will present their research on marine carbon dioxide removal\, and engage in moderated conversation and Q&A to support journalists interested in covering the topic. We’ll unpack how journalists can translate these highly technical concepts\, balance hope with hurdles\, and tell nuanced stories that help the public understand both the potential and the obstacles of ocean-based climate solutions. \n“This session is presented by the University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute and the Solutions Journalism Network. \n“Jaime Palter is a Professor of Oceanography at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography. For over twenty years\, she’s researched the role of ocean circulation in the climate system. Her recent research evaluates the potential for marine Carbon Dioxide Removal to play a role in climate change mitigation. Since coming to URI in 2015\, she has taught hundreds of undergraduates about the science of climate change and the suite of solutions that can help society chart a path to a safer future. \n“David Ho is a climate scientist and marine biogeochemist whose research focuses on air-sea gas exchange\, the ocean carbon cycle\, and marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). He is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa\, a Visiting Faculty in the School of Ocean Futures at Arizona State University\, and a co-founder of [C]Worthy\, a non-profit research organization focused on developing open-source tools for monitoring\, reporting\, and verification (MRV) of mCDR.”

SUMMARY:CASW Connector Chat: How To Cover Ongoing Chaos in Science Funding
DESCRIPTION:Ongoing cuts and reinstatements to federal science funding\, along with related lawsuits\, have kept reporters hopping. At this Connector chat\, top reporters Stephanie Lee of The Chronicle of Higher Education and Katherine Wu of The Atlantic will discuss how they’re managing the deluge: how they track ongoing changes\, keep up with sources and select the stories they focus on. There are several online resources reporters can take advantage of\, including the database Grant Witness. Co-founder Scott Delaney\, of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, will also be on hand to discuss the genesis and continuation of that project. Bring your questions and your tips for resources for our live discussion. \nThis discussion will be recorded and posted on CASW’s YouTube channel. A crowdsourced tip sheet will also be shared with attendees after the webinar. \nRegister here. \nResources: \n\n“An NIH Grant Is Restored\, With a Catch: Cut a Study on Trans Youth\,” The Chronicle of Higher Education\, May 21\, 2025\, by Stephanie M.
