SUMMARY:Santa Marta & the Future of Climate Journalism
DESCRIPTION:“When representatives from nearly 60 countries met in Santa Marta\, Colombia\, in April to discuss pathways for accelerating climate action and shifting away from fossil fuels\, it represented one of the most significant multinational efforts in recent years to address the climate crisis. It also highlighted the critical role of journalism in helping the public understand complex environmental challenges at a time of intense news cycles\, shrinking newsroom resources\, and growing disinformation. \n“This 90-minute\, interactive webinar\, organized by Covering Climate Now and UNESCO\, will examine what emerged from Santa Marta\, explore the implications for journalists covering climate and environmental\, and discuss what lies ahead for environmental journalism. The session will also draw on UNESCO’s and OSCE RFoM’s new manual\, ‘Reporting the Environment: A Practical Manual for Journalists’ (released June 5)\, supported by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC)\, highlighting practical tools and approaches for reporting on climate change\, biodiversity loss\, pollution\, disinformation\, science and environmental accountability.”

SUMMARY:From Big Ag to Big Aquaculture\, Finding Overlooked Stories
DESCRIPTION:“Factory-farmed seafood is the fastest-growing source of seafood worldwide\, and right now in the U.S.\, the aquaculture industry is promoting farmed fish as a sustainable alternative to wild-caught seafood. But that framing buries direct links between this form of food production and land-based industrial farming\, including impacts on ecosystems\, local economies\, and communities. In this FFJN webinar\, join Feini Yin and James Mitchell from the North American Marine Alliance\, along with Laura Lee Cascada from the Aquaculture Accountability Project\, to explore how to report on aquaculture. \n“We’ll unpack industrial aquaculture operations and examine less visible impacts on coastal communities and wild fisheries. You’ll also learn how to explore underreported angles\, how to engage with affected communities\, and how to report with a critical lens\, so you can evaluate industry bluewashing and incorporate these approaches into your own reporting.”

SUMMARY:SWCC In-Person Workshop: Moderating for Impact
DESCRIPTION:“Science writers and communicators are often asked to drive discussions by moderating or sitting on panels in a variety of professional and public venues. How they perform these roles has a big impact on how audiences contextualize important issues and these are roles of increasing importance given the current geopolitical climate. Additionally\, acting in these roles can be an important source of income and professional experience. Despite this\, there is little training for journalists and science communicators on how to maximize the impacts of these experiences for audiences and moderators. Consequently\, panel events often fall into predictable patterns: a mic passed up and down a role of panelists\, a lack of on-stage chemistry\, awkward and sometimes uncomfortable inequity of air time\, and a missed opportunity for everyone. \n“But it doesn’t have to be this way! Dynamic\, inclusive\, entertaining experiences can help tell meaningful\, memorable stories. Effective hosting is a performance that requires artful preparation\, creativity and engagement\, augmenting and managing a well-chosen format and structure. In addition to teaching basic moderation and facilitation skills\, this workshop will help science communications and media professionals hone their hosting skills by tackling pre-event preparation\, dynamic event formats\, stage-presence\, on-stage and virtual interviewing\, participant management and audience engagement. Participants will by guided through improvisational techniques to create and experiment with a variety of panel and other moderated formats in a safe\, innovation-friendly environment. We’ll develop a vocabulary for managing on stage conversations and use role playing scenarios to try out different styles and techniques in a low-stakes collaborative and supportive environment.” \n\nWhere: Montreal\, Quebec\nCost: TBD\n\nRegistration opens soon.

SUMMARY:Science Writers and Communicators of Canada Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:“The 2026 SWCC Annual Conference will take place June 15-16 at the Plaza Centre-Ville in Montréal\, Quebec. The opening reception will be on June 14. \n“In an age when scientific progress often outpaces public understanding\, the work of science journalists\, communicators\, educators\, and policy makers has never mattered more. Yet in the current landscape of political polarization\, public mistrust\, and the decline of traditional science media\, this work comes with significant challenges. \n“SWCC 2026 Montréal explores how science journalists and communicators bridge this growing gulf: turning technical language into meaning\, uncertainty into dialogue\, and understanding into informed decision-making; in particular\, how our success depends on new frameworks\, inclusive practices\, and creative means of connection. Together\, we will consider how to keep human judgment\, reconciliation\, and ethics at the heart of progress\, and ensure that scientific knowledge remains understandable\, transparent\, and inclusive.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: EJN Workshop on Covering Ocean Science and Deep-Sea Exploration for Brazilian Journalists
DESCRIPTION:“Few people realize that humanity has only visually documented an area of the seafloor roughly equivalent to the size of the São Paulo metropolitan area—the vast majority of the ocean floor remains unmapped\, unexplored and unknown. But deep sea ecosystems are critical to global biodiversity\, carbon storage and climate regulation\, and are increasingly threatened by human activity such as deep-sea mining and ocean trawling. A map in the same report referenced above shows how little of the seafloor off Brazil’s own coast has been visually documented\, underscoring the scale of the opportunity and the urgency of building public and political awareness. \n“With support from the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is pleased to announce an in-person three-day workshop opportunity for up to 10 Brazilian journalists to enhance their reporting on topics related to ocean science\, marine biodiversity and deep-sea exploration. \n“Selected participants will travel to Fortaleza\, Brazil\, to attend the workshop which will take place from September 14-16…. For participants based outside the Fortaleza area\, EJN will cover non-refundable economy-class airfare\, accommodation\, meals\, travel medical insurance and ground transportation costs related to workshop participation. Participants based in the Fortaleza area will receive modest per diem to cover their daily travel costs.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Women Photograph Mentorship Program
DESCRIPTION:“We’re now accepting applications for the Women Photograph Mentorship Program! This year\, we will pair six early career photographers with an industry leader as a mentor\, and provide $3\,000 in support for work on a local visual storytelling project over the course of six months. \n“We are currently seeking applications from women and nonbinary photographers of any age with less than five years of professional work experience who might be interested in long-term support. Please make sure to read the FAQ at the bottom of the page\, but if you still have questions please contact hello@womenphotograph.com. \n“The mentorship program will take place remotely over the course of July-December of 2026\, and requires proposing work on a specific project throughout that period. We will strongly prioritize photographers looking to work locally / within their own communities\, and estimate that the mentorship will require a minimum of 8-12 hours of engagement per month. Mentors will be selected specifically because of their areas of expertise in relation to each selected mentee’s project and practice. \n“The photographers who stand to benefit most from this program are already at the beginning of a documentary/photojournalistic practice and looking for targeted guidance and mentoring in the early stages of their career.”

SUMMARY:Reporting on Toxics and Health: Lessons From Covering “Forever Chemicals”
DESCRIPTION:“Accurate reporting on chemicals and health is more important than ever before. While science clearly links chemical exposures to many health harms\, this issue has become increasingly politicized. Petrochemical corporations often fuel the confusion and proactively manufacture doubt about the science. \n“In this [Collaborative for Health & Environment] webinar\, award-winning chemical pollution reporters Sharon Lerner of ProPublica and Stéphane Horel of Le Monde will discuss the importance of accurate local reporting on toxic chemicals. Focusing on PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ as an example\, the speakers will explore the critical role of journalists in covering chemical health hazards\, public decision-making\, and industry strategies to influence both policy and science.”
