SUMMARY:Science Writing I: Online Class at UCLA Extension
DESCRIPTION:“Science writing tells true stories about scientists and research to a variety of audiences. Learn what it takes to translate scientific concepts and discoveries into prose that readers can understand — and enjoy! This course emphasizes science newswriting as a foundational\, gateway skill to other types of science writing. You’ll practice writing science explainers and news articles according to standard structures and come to understand the job of “science writer” through in-class exercises and discussions\, guest speakers\, reading\, and homework. You’ll learn about different career options: freelance or staff\, journalism or institutional communications\, full time or on the side. By the end of the course\, you’ll have 1–3 story ideas\, 3 polished writing samples\, a pitch you can send to a publication\, and a plan for your own next steps in science writing. Note: Technical writing\, scientific manuscript writing\, and science fiction are not part of this course.” \n\nInstructor: Amber Dance\nWhere: Live online\nWhen: Tuesdays\, 6-9 p.m. PT\nFee: $820

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Orion Magazine Call for Digital Submissions
DESCRIPTION:“In addition to our quarterly themed calls for specific issues\, we open twice a year (September 1 and February 1\, each for a two-week period) for digital pitches. These pitches are not tied to a particular theme; rather\, they are an open call for story ideas that feel consistent with Orion’s digital identity and will appear exclusively online. \n“We look for pitches in the following categories: Short essays on general topics\, food-related pieces\, enumerations\, conversations\, graphic stories\, and art portfolios. Before pitching\, please spend some time familiarizing yourself with the stories on our website to get a strong sense of our categories and the work that fits within them.”
