SUMMARY:Media Briefing: Maternal Health in Rural America
DESCRIPTION:“The number of rural hospitals providing obstetric care is declining\, and rural residents are at greater risk of pregnancy-related death and adverse health outcomes. SciLine’s next media briefing will cover how living in a rural community shapes pregnancy and childbirth\, the impact of hospital maternity-unit closures on care access and insurance coverage\, and the long-term health consequences of limited access to maternal health care for both birthing parents and infants. Three scientific experts will participate in a moderated conversation and then take reporter questions on the record.”

SUMMARY:ACIP Meeting Countdown: COVID Vaccine and What Else Is at Stake
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this opportunity to get up to speed before the March 18-19 CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting. This webinar\, co-hosted by the Expert Vaccine Analysis Team and the Association of Health Care Journalists\, will provide independent\, evidence-based discussion of topics expected to come up during the meeting. \nThese items include vaccine safety and quality monitoring\, data on COVID vaccine safety\, possible recommendation votes related to COVID vaccine injuries\, and other issues\, such as the evidence framework the CDC uses to assess vaccine data and the risk/benefit analysis of vaccines. We will also discuss other emerging topics that may arise before the meeting. \nWhether you’re a journalist covering immunization policy\, a public health professional navigating a rapidly shifting vaccine landscape\, or a researcher tracking the latest safety data\, this webinar will help equip you with the scientific context you need to understand what’s at stake. The panel of senior vaccine scientists — including Norman Baylor\, Ph.D.\, Miles Braun\, M.D.\, Fiona Havers\, M.D.\, and Paul Offit\, M.D. — will cut through the noise and offer clear\, unbiased analysis.

SUMMARY:Press Briefing: 'Virtually Impossible Heat' & the Future of the American West
DESCRIPTION:“Hundreds of records have been shattered across the Western US amid an early spring heatwave found to be ‘virtually impossible without climate change.’ As abnormally hot weather continues\, join Covering Climate Now and Climate Central for a special webinar highlighting the potential long-term impacts to Western snowpacks\, water scarcity\, and wildfire risks that will linger long after cooler weather arrives. \nIn this press briefing\, meteorologists and reporters will explain how this extreme heat event offers a glimpse into our climate change future\, equipping journalists with a better understanding of how to make the climate connection in their own reporting during the next ‘heat dome’ impacting their region.”

SUMMARY:DEADLINE: EVOME Science Journalism Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:“The National Science Foundation-supported Evolving Meta-Ecosystems Institute (EVOME) will provide fellowships for six science journalists to participate in a two-week immersion in interdisciplinary evolutionary and global change biology being conducted at the University of Alaska’s Toolik Field Station in northern Alaska. Fellowships will cover transportation costs to and from the Toolik Field Station through Fairbanks\, AK\, plus room and board. \n“EVOME brings together experts from across biological disciplines to generate new insights at every scale of biology\, with the goal of understanding whether species and ecosystems can evolve to match the pace of change\, or whether they might fall apart or muddle along in a reduced state. \n“EVOME Journalism Fellowships offer a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the scientists and experiments answering this critical question. The program will run June 14 to June 28\, 2026. Applications from non-US citizens or green card holders are welcome.”
