“Writing about research—whether published in peer-reviewed journals or fast-moving preprints—is part of the health and science beat. Reporters and editors need to know what studies are solid and significant and which to steer clear of—and then be able to clearly and accurately translate findings to readers, viewers, and listeners.
“This one-day free program for up to 40 credentialed journalists, hosted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and led by two public health experts in research design and one long-time health journalist, will give participants the basic skills needed to understand key concepts in scientific studies. The full day in-person workshop will be held on February 26, 2027, at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C.
“This application-only day-long training . . . is open to credentialed professional reporters whose beats include public health, defined broadly to include health, climate, food, gun violence, mental health, addiction or the healthcare system. Freelancers may apply, as can reporters on nontraditional platforms like Substack.
“Breakfast, lunch, and an end of day reception will be provided.
“Travel funds for transportation and hotel are available for those whose newsrooms can’t subsidize their participation.
“Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2026”
