Nova Institute 2024 Media Fellowship

"The Media Fellowship program aims to give recipients the time, space, and resources to research, write, and speak about issues that validate and show the importance of an expansive health framework. Media Fellowships are one year in duration and full-time, allowing recipients to undertake their projects in a comprehensive and creative manner." Print, broadcast, and digital journalists are eligible to apply. The fellowship award is $100,000 over 12 months, with an additional $7,500 for travel expenses. This award supports a fellow's living expenses, project-related expenses, conference fees, and more. Applications for the 2024-2025 cohort are due on May 28, 2024, and the fellowship term begins on September 16.

HBCU Science Journalism Fellowship

"This new fellowship, launched in 2024, is geared toward students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities who have an interest in science, health, and environmental reporting. The fellowship includes a one-week in-person summer camp and a one-year mentorship experience. A faculty of distinguished science journalists, a team of dedicated mentors, and editors from leading publications will provide the 10 selected fellows with intensive training, coaching, and opportunities to pitch science stories to national and regional outlets. Each fellow will receive a $5,000 stipend." Note: Applications have closed for the 2024-25 class of the HBCU Science Journalism Fellowship.

"Based in Radcliffe Yard—a sanctuary in the heart of Harvard University—fellows join a uniquely interdisciplinary and creative community. A fellowship at Radcliffe is an opportunity to step away from usual routines and dive deeply into a project. With access to Harvard’s unparalleled resources, Radcliffe fellows develop new tools and methods, challenge artistic and scholarly conventions, and illuminate our past and our present." Fellows receive a stipend of $78,000 for work over the course of an academic year (September to May), along with a $5,000 stipend for project expenses. The fellowship deadline for 2024-25 has passed; the application for 2025-26 will be available later in spring 2024.

"The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) works directly with select artists and The National Park Service (and their affiliates) to create unique Artist in Residency programs within the wonders of the National Parks. The NPAF also works closely with museums, galleries, and curators to keep the residency programs relevant to the Art World beyond the parks and bring the highest caliber of artists to the parks." Residencies are available for visual artists, writers, musicians, and performance artists. "American Bird Conservancy's (ABC's) Conservation and Justice Fellowship program provides opportunities to examine and expand how we care for both birds and people. Our paid, part-time fellowships allow individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise to work closely with our staff and partners on understanding how bird conservation efforts can support local communities, ensure the consideration of varied perspectives, and engage more people." There are no education or employment requirements for applying, but fellows must be passionate about birds, biodiversity, conservation, and community engagement. The 2024 fellowships have several specific themes, including indigenous stewardship, lost birds, partnerships, neurodiversity, and education. Applications for the 2024 cohort closed on March 31, and selected fellows will complete their fellowships between June 2024 and May 2025.

Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellowship

"STAT, the leading health and science news publication, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are accepting applications for the Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellowship, which has the goal of diversifying the ranks of science and health journalists and fostering better coverage of science that is relevant to all people. It combines a paid reporting position at STAT with an educational component through MIT’s prestigious Knight Science Journalism (KSJ) program. The one-year fellowship is intended for early-career U.S. journalists from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in the profession and will prepare them for a successful career in science journalism." The deadline for the 2024-25 fellowship is April 26.

Climate disinformation media fellowship 2024

"With this fellowship, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union gives a select number of journalists the opportunity for on-the-ground reporting on climate disinformation case studies. The articles will be published as part of a web dossier on battling climate disinformation. Deadline for applications: Sunday, 10 March 2024, 23:59 CET." Applicants must be based in the European Union or neighboring countries. Special consideration will be given to journalists from regional or local media outlets and who are from diverse backgrounds and can offer lesser-heard perspectives.

Oak Spring Garden Foundation residencies and fellowships

Oak Spring Garden Foundation

The Oak Spring Garden Foundation "is dedicated to inspiring and facilitating scholarship and public dialogue on the history and future of plants, including the culture of gardens and landscapes and the importance of plants for human well-being." Oak Spring offers four fellowships: the Stacy Lloyd III Fellowship for Bibliographic Study for work in some area related to the history, art, and culture of plants, gardens and landscapes; the Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence for an early-career artist who is developing new works that address plants, gardens, or landscapes in the broad sense; the Plant Science Research Fellowship for an early-career plant scientist; and the Plant Conservation Biology Fellowship, awarded to one outstanding, early-career practitioner, scholar or scientist working on issues related to plant and landscape conservation in the broad sense. All fellowships include a $10,000 grant. There are also 2- to 5-week residencies offered to people working in the arts, humanities, and plant sciences, as well as plant or landscape conservation. The 2024 deadline to apply for all programs is May 31.

We provide support through short-term grants and yearlong reporting fellowships. We accept applications from freelance and staff journalists worldwide." Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for grants for reporting on a wide variety of topics, including climate and labor reporting, global health reporting, and science misinformation reporting.

AHCJ-Equity in Health Journalism Fellowships

"AHCJ, with support from The Commonwealth Fund, provides financial assistance to journalists who write for media outlets serving under-resourced and/or underrepresented communities that want to attend AHCJ’s annual conference." The fellowship includes conference registration, travel and lodging for the conference, and a year's membership in AHCJ. The 2024 application deadline is April 5 for the conference taking place in New York City from June 7 to 9.

"Our National Fellowship helps journalists and their newsrooms report deeply and authoritatively on the health, welfare and well-being of children, families and communities. The program prepares fellows to report a major enterprise health or social well-being reporting project in the months that follow our initial week of intensive learning in Los Angeles." Fellowships receive a week of training, reporting grants of $2,000 to $10,000, and mentorship on their reporting projects. The deadline for the 2024 National Fellowship is April 10.

"The Hawaii-based National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is accepting applications for its Environmental Journalism Program offered May 12–18, 2024. Designed for professional journalists (staff or freelance) working in broadcast, print, online, and other media, the immersive program provides a background in tropical botany, ecology, and biocultural conservation with a progressive approach that honors Indigenous legacies and integrates cultural values. The program is structured to enhance well-informed, accurate reporting on environmental issues with a focus on tropical and island systems and the importance of plant science, conservation, and biodiversity." The deadline to apply for the 2024 program was February 21.
