CASW Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award for Young Science Journalists

"The award is intended to encourage young science writers by recognizing outstanding reporting and writing in any field of science. The award is given in memory of Ev Clark, a veteran journalist at Business Week, The New York Times and Newsweek, and Seth Payne, his long-time friend and colleague at Business Week and a founder of the award. It is designed to carry on the work of both men, who offered friendship and advice to generations of young journalists." Winners receive a cash prize and expenses paid to attend the NASW/CASW Science Writers conference, where the award is presented. Applications are due June 30.

CASW Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting

"CASW established the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting in 2000. Given annually, the prize seeks to honor a writer for a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years which, for reasons of uncommon clarity, accuracy, breadth of coverage, enterprise, originality, insight and narrative power, has made a profound and lasting contribution to public awareness and understanding of critical advances in medical science and their impact on human health and well-being." The honoree receives an award of $3,000, presented at the NASW/CASW ScienceWriters conference in October. The deadline for nominations is June 30.

Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award

The Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award recognizes the accomplishments of a mid-career science journalist with a career prize and a grant of at least $20,000 to enable the winner to undertake a significant reporting project. It recognizes and supports reporting and writing that embodies the high standards embodied by Sharon Begley (1956–2021), a science journalist of unflinching dedication, skill, moral clarity, and commitment to mentoring. For 2025, the entries are due April 30, and the winner will be announced in late summer. Candidates must be experienced journalists who have compiled a substantial body of work in science journalism, defined as print, audio, video, and online reporting on science, health/medicine, environment, mathematics, and technology.

National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications

National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine

Applications for the 2025 awards are now open, with a deadline of March 31. "Submissions are now being accepted for the National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications, given by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with Schmidt Sciences. The awards honor exceptional science communicators, journalists, and research scientists who have developed creative, original work to communicate issues or advances in science, engineering, or medicine to the general public. Submissions are encouraged from individuals who have developed high-quality communications in 2024 and demonstrated the ability to communicate the spectrum of science, engineering, or medicine. The program will confer 24 awards totaling $640,000. In addition to the prize, Schmidt Sciences will help foster a vibrant and expanding community of science communications awardees by partnering with renowned journalistic institutions to provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities."

"The annual Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards has become a recognized standard for excellence in climate journalism. Since our program’s launch in 2021, it has grown every year by leaps and bounds. We now routinely receive more than 1,000 entries, from dozens of countries, on every continent. A similarly global panel of more than 100 judges — all journalists, including many prior CCNow Award recipients — selects the winners." Entry submissions cover 14 subject-based categories. The awards also have a “Large projects & collaborations” category; an “Emerging Journalists of the Year" and a “Journalists of the Year” award, given to "three journalists who demonstrate exemplary commitment to the climate story and whose work has had a transformative impact on our profession."

"The Victor K. McElheny Award recognizes outstanding local and regional journalism covering issues in science, public health, technology, or the environment. Each year, the award honors a single entry — be it a series or standalone piece — with a $10,000 prize." Applications for the award are typically open from December to January, with the prize presented in the spring. For 2025, nominations will be accepted between December 15, 2024 and January 31, 2025.

"The new Goldsmith Prize for Explanatory Reporting honors reporting that focuses on the functioning of government and the implementation of public policy. Exemplary pieces use an explanatory and solutions-focused lens to illuminate a government or public policy implementation process, program, or problem. The winner of the Goldsmith Prize for Explanatory Reporting receives $15,000, to be awarded directly to the winning journalist or team." The deadline to submit work for the 2025 prize is January 9, 2025.

NFPW Professional Communications Contest

National Federation of Press Women

The NFPW National Communications Contest is open to writers regardless of gender, professional status, or location. Categories include writing, editing, photography, web and social media, and more. Entrants apply at the state level to affiliate organizations in their state; first-place winners from the state-level contest then move to the national level. For the 2025 contest, work must be published or broadcast between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. Deadlines: Early-bird deadline is January 29, final deadline for books is February 5, and final deadline for other work is February 19.

Reed Environmental Writing Award

The Southern Environmental Law Center's annual Reed Environmental Writing Award "seeks to enhance public awareness of the value and vulnerability of the South’s natural treasures by giving special recognition to writers who most effectively tell the stories about the region’s environment." There are two categories: Book, for works of nonfiction (not self-published), and Journalism, for newspaper, magazine, and online writing that is published by a recognized institution such as a newspaper, university, or nonprofit organization. Entries must relate to the natural treasures or environmental challenges in at least one of SELC’s states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. Winners will be invited to read from their winning entry at a special SELC event during the Virginia Festival of the Book, held every March in Charlottesville,Va. The deadline for the 2025 awards is October 1.

James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public

American Chemical Society

This annual award from the American Chemical Society seeks to "recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding reporting directly to the public which materially increases the public's knowledge and understanding of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields." It includes a $5,000 prize and covers travel and expenses (up to $2,500) to travel to the ACS meeting at which the award will be presented. The deadline is November 1.

AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)

"The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research." The award is open to "print, broadcast, and online professional journalists whose stories appear in newspapers, magazines, websites, and broadcast platforms that target lay public audiences." Winners receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a commemorative award. For the 2024 award, submissions are due on December 9.

The Kovler Prize for Trust in Life Science Journalism

In its inaugural year, the Kovler Prize for Trust in Life Science Journalism honors an individual who has significantly increased the public’s awareness and understanding of life science through their distinguished body of work through any media. The prize includes a $25,000 honorarium. The winner will be honored at the FNIH 12th Annual Awards Ceremony on October 29, 2024, in Washington, D.C. 2024 Applications are open Wednesday, July 31, through Friday, August 30, 2024 at 5 p.m. ET.

Applications for the 2024 awards are now open, with a deadline of March 31. "The National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications, given by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with Schmidt Sciences, recognize excellent science communicators, science journalists, and research scientists who have developed creative, original work to communicate issues and advances in science, engineering, or medicine for the general public." In 2024, the awards will be given to nine research scientists, nine science journalists, and six science communicators who developed created, original work published or released in 2023 that explores issues or advances in science, engineering or medicine for the general public.

Most are topic-based, meaning entries compete head-to-head whether they appeared in magazines, newspapers, online outlets or on radio or television stations." Journalism in a variety of mediums is encouraged and may include a combination of writing, photography, data visualization, video or audio." The Online Journalism Awards are typically open for entries in April/May and are presented at the Online News Association's annual meeting in late summer/early fall.

AGU's journalism awards recognize excellence in Earth and space science journalism. The David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism—News recognizes excellence in science news reporting, produced under deadline pressure of one week or less. The Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism—Features recognizes excellence in science feature reporting, generally produced under a deadline of longer than one week. Awardees receive recognition at AGU's Fall Meeting and covered travel expenses to attend the meeting. The deadline for the 2024 awards, which honor reporting published in 2023, is March 27, 2024.
